Some fake plants look almost real; others are plastic and crude. There is beauty, though, in nearly any plant – fake or real. When it comes to real plants and flowers there is so much care involved. Artificial types offer a way to punctuate rooms with beauty and color without all the hassle. You’ve probably seen hundreds of plant and flower arrangements in your life. There are ones in planters and ones in vases. A single flower or a mixture of flowers and greenery.
There’s one artificial flower and plant arrangement you can make that you’ve likely never seen before. Although it might not be convincing as a real plant it’s a beautiful creation that’s really inexpensive and unique. It’s made from a Kleenex box and a few handkerchiefs!
The type of Kleenex box you use should be one that’s short and rectangular. The cube-type boxes are not ideal for this project. Cut the plastic away from the Kleenex box opening and wrap the box with decorative paper or fabric. Scrapbook paper offers you a way to create a theme for the box. Use it to create a metallic look, a botanical look, or even a seaside scene. After wrapping the box cut out the opening on top.
You’ll need several handkerchiefs to make the leaves for the plants. It’s hard to find hankies in the color of green, for goodness sakes, so it’s probably necessary to dye them or even color them with paint markers. However, there are some arrangements you can make that look good with white “leaves”.
To create the plant leaves from handkerchiefs hold the first one at two opposite corners. Tuck one corner into the box and leave the opposite corner hanging outside the box. Do this to another and another hanky, positioning them around the opening of the Kleenex box. If you want, you can additional rows of hankies, aligning them on top of the others. When you do this, tuck even more of the corner of the hanky into the box so that the second row of leaves are slightly shorter than the bottom row.
You can experiment with the leaves, twisting some of the hankies, rolling some of them, and mixing various colors. When you’re finished place a single, large flower right in the center. The unusual planter adds a touch of beauty to a tabletop or counter. It doesn’t look real but it is real cute!
