You know how most neighborhoods have that one crazy cat lady? I’m kind of that person, only with dogs. So naturally, when a friend of a friend needed to find a new home for some puppies, I jumped at the chance. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.
I’ve had several dogs before, but none of them were very big. When I first got Nellie, she was a puppy that weighed 20 pounds. Within the first few months of having her, 20 pounds quickly doubled to 40. I’ve had her a year now, and her weight has doubled again, to 80. This dog is huge, and still growing. She’s also very destructive. It doesn’t matter what toy you give her, she will destroy it.
Like any young dog, Nellie loves to play. This has been problematic. She has destroyed frisbees, stuffed animals, squeaky toys, tennis balls, even baseballs. The vet refers to her as an ‘extreme chewer’, and indeed she is. I’ve tried dozens of toys that are supposed to be indestructible, but none of them have lasted. At least, not till I found the Kong.
Kong is a brand of dog toys that I had heard a lot about. They’re a little pricey, with the large Kong costing between $8 – $12. I went to their website and was surprised to see that by signing your dog up, they would send you a free toy. This offer is no longer available, but I jumped at the chance for Nellie to try it out.
A few weeks later, the Kong arrived in the mail. The Kong is made of hard plastic, with a hole at the top and the bottom. You can fill these holes with a variety of stuff. The company also sells food spray that you can put inside the toy, but I already had dog treats on hand, so I used those instead.
Nellie went crazy for this toy. She spent a hour chasing it around the room trying to get her treat out of the toy. Even after she got the treat, she still loved chasing the Kong around the room.
The shape of the Kong is very odd, resembling a snowman. This unique shape makes it easy for dogs to hold between their paws. I also think it makes it more appealing for them to chew on. Best of all, Nellie has had this toy for several months now, but has still not been able to break it!
The Kong is very bouncy, so if a dog happens to drop it from their mouth, it’ll bounce away from them. The shape also allows it to zig zag around rather than rolling. This keeps Nellie entertained for hours. She would chew on the toy for a while, then when she got bored, she’d start bouncing and rolling it around. She loves this toy so much she even brings it to bed with her. I’ve caught her several times with the Kong under her head like a pillow, or even hanging out of her mouth when she sleeps.
Another thing that I love about the Kong is that I was able to freeze it. I live in the south, so in the summer month it gets very hot. I had been looking for toys I could freeze without causing it or Nellie any harm. The Kong was the first dog toy that I was able to do this with. They even recommend adding some Kong spray to the toy and freezing. By allowing your dog to play with it while it’s both frozen and thawed, it keeps them entertained and prevents them from growing bored of the same routine.
The only thing I don’t like about the Kong is how fast Nellie is able to get the treats out of it. I’ve used the Kong spray and peanut butter before, but Nellie is able to lick the spray out within a few minutes. While this was disappointing, this can easily be solved by using a small treat inside the Kong instead.
Overall, I love this toy. If you have a dog that is an extreme chewer, or even a dog that just seems bored, I highly recommend giving the Kong a try. It comes in several different sizes and types, so there’s something for all breeds. They even have a special Kong toys made for puppies and senior dogs too, so not matter what the age, your dog can have a great time with this toy. They are a little pricey, but after seeing how much Nellie likes it, it is well worth the price.
