There’s only a few weeks of summer left. Labor Day, the traditional end of summer is September 6th. Soon the day’s will become shorter. The air will become cooler. There is still time to pack in some summer fun. Here are a few ideas for the last of the summer days.
Make a dragonfly ring. This has been one of my favorite summer activities since I was a kid. Parents like it, because the kids will actually be still and quite. All you need is a garden of dragonflies and a finger. Stand very still in the garden. Extend you finger to touch a plant where dragonflies like to land. Be very still. It may take a few minutes. They will begin to buzz around investigating the finger. When they are satisfied that there is no danger, they land. If you continue to be still they will stay. After a few seconds, slowly begin to raise the finger closer to your face. If you have a brave dragonfly you will get an up close view of your ring. If you do this on a regular basis, the dragonflies will get used to you and they will stay longer. Kids love this. It is so cool to have a dragonfly on your finger. Remember, dragonflies are fragile, and friendly. Do not kill the dragonfly. They are insect eaters. Think of the stories the kids can tell at school.
Another childhood memory of mine is ice cream Sundays. On hot summer Sundays, it would be too hot to cook dinner. My parents would make a big batch of homemade ice cream for dinner. Can you imagine how big a deal that was. Parents actually allowing the kids to eat nothing but ice cream for dinner. It was such a special treat. We would hover around the ice cream maker like it was Christmas. We could not wait to dig in. Obviously, this is not something you want to do on a regular basis. It is a good way to say good-bye to summer.
Turn your yard into a water park. Invite the cousins over, and the friends down the street. Ask everyone to bring their favorite picnic fare. Wear your swimsuit and load up on the sun block. Have a water filled, afternoon of fun. Hook up sprinklers. Toss water balloons. Have a water gun fight. Put out the slip and slide. Don’t worry about the lawn or the mosquitoes. Just have fun.
There are many things we can do to celebrate the end of summer. Pick an activity that is out of the ordinary. Then just do it. Make a few memories before school starts. It doesn’t have to be expensive just fun.
