I first heard the news sometime last night during a commercial for the local news. Lady Gaga was set to hit Portland, Maine to participate in the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell rally being held in Deering Oaks Park this afternoon.
And though I’ve been in and out of my office all day (the long walk down the hall is wearing me out), I’ve been inundated with news about this event. Wait, no I haven’t.
Not one bit.
All I’ve heard is about Lady Gaga coming to speak and how wonderful that Lady Gaga is joining the rally and let’s all come out for Lady Gaga’s rally at 4pm today.
Then my significant other called to tell me he wasn’t sure when he would be home. This was at 11:47am. Portland city officials had already started roping off streets in preparation for her big arrival.
My kid heard it on the radio today and wanted to ride her bike down to the rally-leaving at 7am this morning she may have made it just in time on her cute little legs.
Twice I typed Lady Gaga Portland Maine into the search bar of Yahoo and was blown away by the level of coverage. Take a look for yourself. The city of Portland (according to early reports) was expecting 20,000 people at today’s (Lady Gaga) rally.
I’m thinking city officials may be underestimating the power of this girl.
And what’s the point?
Kudo’s to Lady Gaga for bringing some serious attention to a serious issue that needs to be addressed correctly. More power to her if she can get our Senators to listen.
But wow, Portland. Really? All this for Lady Gaga? I support the cause, really I do. And maybe I’m just irritated that our city has completely gone gaga over this event because of Lady Gaga.
The importance of it, though?
That the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell rally being held today in Deering Oaks Park works toward its intended purpose. With or without the gaga-Lady Gaga, that is.
I do hope a good time (and a productive one) is had by all. If I didn’t dislike large crowds and wasn’t so sniffly I may have found my way down there today too. Cheers!
Have I unknowingly contributed to the gaga?
