“Law & Order: Los Angeles” Episode 6 entitled “Hondo Field” originally aired on November 10, 2010 at 10:00 pm ET. What was initially thought of as the accidental death of an oil rig worker turns out to be a homicide; Detectives Winters and Jaruszalski take the case which will prove to be challenging and inflammatory.
The investigation takes the detectives on their first trip to an oil rig platform to interview the crew for more information on Freddy, the Mexican worker who was murdered. The crew proves to be an interesting group, especially the only female worker, Megan Boone. Megan seems to have a grudge against men. Boone hires a local celebrity lawyer, and then appears on her show that evening to describe the harassment and illicit comments made by the crew on the oil rig. Freddy and his mother are exposed as illegal immigrants by Boone’s lawyer during the trial to change jury’s focus from Boone to illegal immigrants trying to prevent themselves from being deported turning to violence.
The highlight of the episode is the 4 minute cross examination of Boone by Dekker in which he provokes her anger and presents the text messages that prove Boone was the instigator who killed him because he was planning on reporting her to the company; she would lose her job. The text messages included statements that called Freddy her “little brown man” and told him to “4 get ur grlfrnd, out here u belong to me.” The manner in which Dekker slowly draws out Boone’s anger and confession is spellbinding. Set in Los Angeles instead of New York, this spin-off of the Law & Order series offers a look at how the “beautiful people” live and the crimes committed on the “West Coast.” The detectives are knowledgeable but more laid back than the New York detectives with a different type of humor. The humor inserted into each episode cuts the serious business of homicide investigation and provides the viewer with a glimpse of the personality of the detectives and lawyers. This spin off seems to be attempting to approach current issues with a fresh perspective that appeals to a different audience. Terrace Howard is a fresh face with enormous talent. Howard is a raw talent waiting to be discovered, his time is now.
