When you’re mowing your lawn you tend to just want to get things done and not worry about problems that could happen. While this is all well and good there are quite a bit of things you should know when mowing your lawn and what to watch for in terms of your mower itself. A lawn mower can be an invaluable tool and it is relatively cheap in terms of things, but it is after all the piece of technology and if it is not properly taken care of it can break down and no longer work.
Before you step out to mow your lawn you need to be sure that the conditions are even right to mow. You can’t just mow whenever you feel like because you can cause damage to your lawn and to your lawn mower if you do so. For instance if the grass is to wet and you try to mow it, your lawn mower blade can get stuck and you can easily burn up the motor and ruin your mower. Not only that, but your lawn may not look very good when you get done, even if you get done in the first place. Just as your lawn being too wet can be a problem for your lawn and your mower, it being too hot and dry can cause a problem too. If your lawn is too dry and you attempt to mow it you can actually cause burn marks in the grass due to the heat that the mower produces. Not only can it cause your lawn to burn, but if it’s to hot your mower can get way to hot and as a result you could easily burn out the mower. As a safe bet you should always mow only when the right temperature and other variable are meant to protect your lawn and your mower in the process.
The next thing you need to know is the routine maintenance that you have to perform before and after you mow your lawn. The first thing that you should do before you even attempt to mow your lawn is to check your oil levels. Low oil levels spell the end to an engine faster than anything just like they do in your car. You should constantly check it to make sure it’s at the right levels and make sure that no oil is leaking. The next thing that you need to check it the mower blade to be sure that it is properly sharpened. If you have to sharpen the blade make sure that you use the proper tool to do so and if you can’t, just order a replacement blade. The last thing that you need to check before you begin mowing your lawn is the air filter. The air filter is important in keeping your mower engine clean and making sure that you meet the state emission requirements. You don’t want to get fined because your air filter is not in proper working order.
The last type of maintenance that you should perform on your mower is what you do after you’re done mowing. The first thing you want to do is check your mower for any damage that may have been done from the mowing you just performed. If you don’t notice any damage to the mower the next thing you need to do is clear all the excess grass from underneath the mower. This will allow your mower to run cleanly each time and prevent any damage due to grass buildup. As long as both these things are done your mower should be able to operate normally. To be safe however, you should always rinse your mower down with water and clean the blade, this way you are sure to keep the mower in the condition that it was when you first bought it. Doing this things will improve the look of your lawn and improve the life of your mower as well.
