Leonardo DiCaprio has gone from child star to teenage icon to one of the best actors of his generation. Having that kind of longevity in Hollywood from childhood on is a rare thing and his exceptional talents are the reason why Leonardo has been able to stay relevant all of this time. His talent has definitely not been wasted in many subpar movies and he has some really great ones under his belt. In this article I wanted to choose what I thought were the ten best movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio and write a bit about what I liked about each. So, here is my list of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best movies of his career so far.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape– In one of his earliest films, he stars along side Johnny Depp as his mentally handicapped brother, Arnie. Although he was still very young in this movie you could already start to see the makings of a terrific actor and the movie itself is wonderful.
The Basketball Diaries– In the basketball diaries you get to see the transformation of a high school basketball standout into a hardcore heroin addict that loses everything in the process of trying to score more drugs.
Titanic– Titanic is one of the highest grossing films of all time and was released during the height of Leonardo’s teen heartthrob phase of his career. This falls more towards being a chick flick but it still has a good storyline and is well acted.
Gangs of New York-Years after watching his father be murdered a young man returns to his old neighborhood to befriend and then seek revenge on the man who took his father’s life. I thought that this movie was very good, although it lagged at times, and DiCaprio’s performance as Amsterdam was one of his best.
Catch Me if You Can– Dicaprio stars as Frank Abagnale Jr., a young kid troubled by his parents separation and begins to commit fraud and assumes the identity of many different professions to do so.
The Aviator– In this picture about eccentric tycoon Howard Hughes, Leo plays the lead role. While it probably is in the bottom half of his top ten movies, Dicaprio does a fine job portraying Hughes and I really liked the way he captured his descent into madness.
The Departed– William Costigan is tasked with infiltrating the crew of a notorious Boston gangster, played by Jack Nicholson, and producing enough evidence to bring him down for good. This was one of the best movies of 2006 and the cast and direction are wonderful.
Blood Diamond– His accent sounds a bit ridiculous at times while playing the role of a South African but the story of the diamond trade and its influence in African civil wars is very interesting.
Revolutionary Road – Revolutionary Road wasn’t one of his blockbuster films but it is definitely one of his best. He once again teams up with Titanic costar Kate Winslet as a couple who’s dreams of a better life soon turn sour.
Inception – Inception was one of the biggest movies of 2010 as well as one of the best. DiCaprio plays the role of Cobb, an agent who extracts information from people’s minds while they are asleep. The movie is highly entertaining with lots of different layers that you have to pay constant attention to and well worth a viewing.
