Leonardo DiCaprio is a phenomenal actor. Sure, he might portray virtually the same character in each of his movies, but he portrays the same character extraordinarily well over and over again. Here’s a look at the top seven movies he’s ever been a part of.
7. Blood Diamond, 2006
Blood Diamond is a 2006 film based in the 1996-1999 Sierra Leone Civil War. DiCaprio plays mercenary, Danny Archer, a renowned smuggler of the blood diamonds, which is the term used for the diamonds mined in the warzones of Africa and taken by greedy warlords and diamond companies. Though he didn’t receive any for this movie, he was nominated for numerous Awards.
6. Catch Me If You Can, 2002
Based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., played by DiCaprio, Catch Me If You Can covers the life of Abagnale, an unusually savvy check forger, who, before the age of 19, impersonates over eight different identities, forges Pan American Airline payroll checks, and successfully steals over $2.8 million. Spielburg directs and produces an amazing movie in which DiCaprio, alongside Tom Hanks, delivers a phenomenal performance.
5. Shutter Island, 2010
A true mind bender, Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that will take you through so many twists and turns you may second guess your own sanity for a moment. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Agent Teddy Daniels who goes to the mysterious Shutter Island, where only the craziest of mental health patients are kept, to help find a patient who has apparently disappeared… or so he thinks.
4. The Aviator, 2004
A Golden Globe awarded performance by DiCaprio, The Aviator is based on a true story in early 20th century America. DiCaprio portrays successful producer and screenwriter Howard Hughes who, despite his frequent successes, most notably Scarface and Hell’s Angels, he has on aspiration he has yet to acquire: aviation. The tag line reads: “Some men dream the future, he built it.”
3. The Departed, 2006
Certainly DiCaprio’s most critically decorated, though perhaps not his most critically acclaimed, The Departed, DiCaprio stars alongside Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg in a depiction of the infiltration of the Irish Mob. Both DiCaprio and Damon’s characters are thrust into the mob as undercover agents of the police force, and attempt to uncover each others’ true identities. DiCaprio received countless awards for Best Actor as well as taking part in the Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture
2. Titanic, 1997
By far the most successful of his films, Titanic is a fictionalized account based on the infamous crash of the maiden voyage of the famed Titanic in 1912. The movie was the most commercially successful movie ever made until its director, James Cameron, outdid himself with the release of Avatar in 2009. DiCaprio plays Jack Dawson, a lowlife nobody who becomes interested in the high-class and sophisticated Rose (Kate Winslet). Leo received both a Blockbuster Entertainment Award and a MTV Movie Award for his performance.
1. Inception, 2010
One of the most uniquely mind blowing movies of all time, Inception is incredible, and DiCaprio’s performance: outstanding. Director Christopher Nolan, known most notably up to this point for his work on the new Batman series with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, outdoes himself as he casts DiCaprio in the role of Dom Cobb, a notorious and outlaw dream-stealer, who enters into others’ dreams and minds to both extract information and plant some of his own. When Cobb is offered the job of a lifetime, one that would erase his record and allow him to see his family again, he has little choice but to accept: inception.
