Recently Liberty Science Center held what they referred to as a homeschool day. I visited with my family and expected to have a really fun day learning. Within the last several years Liberty Science Center had a large remodel. Unfortunately I do not think that the remodel was a good thing for the center. They seemed to have gotten rid of a lot of exhibits that they once had, that were a lot of fun. The first thing that I noticed when I first arrived was that the staff was not very friendly. I had sighed my kids up for a few of their so called homeschool workshops. The reason why I say so called workshops was because the classes seemed to be taught by inexperienced staff members. The teachers in the class knew less than may son on the topic they were supposed to be teaching.
After purchasing my tickets, we wondered around unsure of where to go. The location where my son was going to take his homeschool class had a group of very rude staff members standing around doing nothing. They would not even give us information on where some of the exhibits were located because it was not time for them to start yet.
The next location we visited was the area for young children. This is a very small space which looks like it could only hold a few kids and adults. They had a few activities that were interesting to the kids, such as the ball shooter, and the rice measuring table. They have a few animals that the kids could look at but for my kids it did not hold their attention very long. This room seems more like a very small day care center. The next area was the theater, and the cafeteria. The most popular theater is the IMAX Theater of course for many. The theaters cost an extra fee in additional to the admission price so we skipped all of these. In addition to the fact that they did not have any shows starting until later in the day. The cafeteria was small, and prices higher than I have ever seen.
Once we visited the exhibits located on the upper levels we found that many of them were broken or just run down. It really ruined the experience to see that the exhibits were not working, and we could not use them. Some of the special areas that they have which seem to be for demonstrations were not open, and their was no information posted as to when they would be open. When we tried to find out information on these areas, the staff was not helpful. They either did not know, or did not feel like being bothered answering the questions. The overall experience was disappointing, and really not worth the price. Even for the homeschool day discount. Although they offer a discounted price for homeschoolers, I would have expected more homeschooler activities. It seems that adding a few homeschooling workshops is just a way to get some additional business during the school year.
