It may sound like an oxymoron, but the real meaning to life can be found only through doing what is right, with our conscience as the guide, and that entails real sacrifices of time, comfort and convenience. Leaders, who inspire, though they are rarer by the day, make sacrifices in terms of personal time and space, to lead from the front. Of course, they have to rise to the challenges and even enjoy the daily vicissitudes. In personal lives, we should live by our conscience and do what is right, despite the needed sacrifices and also avoid easier options.
Our forefathers sacrificed, even their lives, to fight for freedom and a better life. They lived by their convictions, and many led from the front to fight for justice. The life that we take for granted is the result off their blood and toil. In a way, we avoid their mistakes and so have an easier time; as we know what works! Albert Einstein’s words come to mind; Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!
But human frailties are difficult to overcome and we tend to have short memories, especially when it comes to greed which overtakes us, once too often! We are facing one financial crisis after another; obviously Einstein’s words are not heeded! It is a casino mentality, despite the heavy odds of failure; we cannot resist our temptation to go for broke with a belief that we are the chosen one! However, we still mange to get out of the rut, but bruised physically and mentally! No more the old-fashioned slog for success, when casinos are springing up to cater to the communists, even!
Modern life is taking its toll! With too many crying for attention, I mean, the electronic toys, face-to-face interaction is in the back-burner, another endangered species! Even those who lived by such camaraderie have switched to modern impersonal ways, just to keep-up with the times or just carried away by the glitzy offerings. Despite embellishments by the day, they will still remain inanimate, and cannot give a human touch to our lives. And most realize that too late; their life having passed them by!
Life can play tricks on most. What we are is not the same, few years later. Our priorities change over time with age, circumstances etc. Yes, working life envelopes us, but are we not guilty of too much indulgence? We take the easy out, on the premise that chances may not come our way again; but why grab those which can put paid to a life as it should be lived? Money is important, but human relations cannot be built overnight or with money. Money attracts the wrong company, like flies to honey. True friends will be left out of the equation; just put-off by our obsession for monetary success.
Bill Gates & Warren Buffet realized that there is a higher calling; why be surrounded by people who mouth what we want to listen? They may not have taken a clean break and accepted an ascetic life; but still, they have found the wisdom to make real course corrections. The descent is smooth for them after reaching the summit. They have beatific smiles to testify to their bliss! And their families are with them for a fulfilling life.
We need not reach any summit; we can still slow down and balance our lives even when cruising at ground level! We should sacrifice & make it clear to all that matter that life has a deeper meaning. Even our unsustainable demands on nature are a dead give-away that we get decreasing returns overall, if the pursuit of the mammon is an end in itself. The mad rush has to be reversed, not by name calling at country levels, but by cooler heads sitting across the table to chart our further journey based on plain home truths. Family should come first – after all, no one can be an island for long; the real investment has to be made where the returns are enduring, beyond working life and even beyond the grave! Let our journey become meaningful with every step! The smiles will automatically return, sparing none!
