My grand daughter was born three weeks early, and although we had a lot of newborn sized outfits for her to wear, and a nice one to come home from the hospital in, we found that she was swimming in the newborn size. I could not find preemie sized clothes that I liked until I shopped at Belk and found the Little Me brand of clothing.
Our baby weighed 6 pounds 3 ounces when she was born, but three days later when she came home from the hospital she had lost some of that weight, and was only 5 pounds 11 ounces. She clearly needed smaller clothes than the typical newborn size, so I went on a mission to find a few sets of clothing items that would fit her now.
After looking all over town, I ended up finding the perfect preemie outfits at our local Belk store. I was amazed at the selection of one piece items called “Footies”, and ended up purchasing three outfits. These consist of one piece construction, with snaps down one side. Some of the Little Me Preemie items had snaps down both sides of the legs, feet and in the crotch area, but these are harder to put back on after a diaper change. The design with the snaps down just one side means faster and easier dressing. Since our baby does not like to be cold, a small factor like this is important to us.
Little Me Preemie Footies are made from 100% cotton, and can be machine washed in cold water with a mild detergent, and can be tumble dried on low heat. Our baby measured 18 inches long when she was born, and the Little Me Preemie Footies fit babies up to 18 inches and up to 5 pounds in weight. Little Me clothes can be found at upscale department stores such as Nordstrom,
We always wash our baby clothes before putting them on our newborn, and the Little Me Preemie Footies measure 15 1/2 inches from the neck of the garment to the heel of the garment. They did shrink up just a tad in the dryer, but I had the heat a little warmer than I should have. Actually the fact that they did shrink was a good thing, they were still a little too large for our preemie!
Little Me Preemie Footies come in a variety of colors and designs. My favorite is their “Little Me Little Violets Preemie Footie” and their “Little Me Vintage Rose Preemie Footie”, which also comes with a matching hat. I like the design of the sleeves, there are small ruffles at the ends, and no elastic to cut into the wrist of a newborn.
My daughter received some preemie outfits that consisted of a pair of pants with no snaps on the crotch, and a matching shirt that was hard to get on. The pants were too tight at the waist and caused problems with the umbilical cord on our baby, which has not yet fallen off. These Little Me Preemie Footies are perfect because they do not cut into the waist and seem to be very comfortable.
The outfits wash up really well, I try to snap them closed before adding to my washer and dryer, and as long as I treat any stains as soon as the outfits become soiled, the stains have all come out, giving me new looking outfits each time.
I expected to pay much more than I did for nice preemie clothes, but these retailed for $15.00 each, and were on sale for 40% off. On top of that, Belk had 20% coupons that they applied to my sale, bringing the total to a very reasonable amount. It is a pleasure to recommend Little Me Preemie Footies!
