Little Tony’s Pizza in Placentia, California is the closest you’ll get to eating Chicago-style pizza in California! I was new to the Orange County area and I have a serious love for pizza. My then roommate suggested we pick up a pizza from this place he knew near campus and I agreed.
The wait time for a deep dish pizza is literally 40 minutes. I was hungry, aggravated and a little irritated. I mean.. come on! 40 minutes for a pizza? I thought that was a bit ridiculous. My suggestion is.. order ahead of time! The place is quite nice. Parking is never a problem since its located in a shopping plaza. Inside the pizza shop reminds you of a typical sports bar. It’s heavily decorated with Chicago Cubs (Baseball) and Chicago Bears (Football) memorbilia. If I didn’t know I was in California.. I would have thought I was in Chicago!
When our pizza finally arrived, the box was piping hot. You can see the steam coming from the sides of the box. I like seeing fresh food right out of the oven! The price for a medium pizza was around $20. It’s pricey compared to local pizza joints that charge between $5-$10 for a medium pizza. This pizza place is worth the extra bucks because of the quality of flavor they put into it.
We took our pizza home and my first thought was, “wow.. this is really oily and I’m definitely going to the gym tonight!” I’ll admit, I was extremely turned off by the looks of the pizza. It’s as if the pizza makers slathered the pizza in oil and put it in the oven.
My roommate puts a slice on a plate for me and hands me a fork. Being a pizza lover, I’ve never and I mean.. NEVER ate pizza with a fork. It’s like a hamburger to me.. You eat it with your hands. It’s a finger food! He assures me that I’m gonna need a fork. Taking his advice, I use a fork and cut a piece out.. All I can say is.. my first bite was blissful. There were so many flavors on my tastebuds. I was able to chew the crust and dough part, but on the other hand, the marinara was sweet and salty! The cheese was extremely stringy and completely delicious.
Although I’ve never been to Chicago, I’ve been told that this pizza place is legit. It’s the closest you’ll get to Chicago-style pizza. Even if you’ve never been to Chicago or you just wanna try out deep dish pizza, this is the place to be!
I suggest calling ahead of time, bring extra napkins and use a fork!
