Although Recycle a Bicycle claims to be in DUMBO, technically speaking (although technically it depends on who you’re speaking to, technically speaking), they are close enough to Vinegar Hill that we can consider them part of the neighborhood.
But technicalities aside, Recycle a Bicycle is definitely the coolest shop in the area and some even claim the entire universe. Or at least the city.
If you are unfamiliar with these guys, the DUMBO shop is the headquarters of the organization, which is a city wide “youth training and environmental education initiative.” The DUMBO shop is a super handy cycle repair and refurbishing garage which also sells donated bikes.
They have all kinds of programs and thus, need for all kinds of volunteers (and money, and of course bikes). But there is no gift quite like the gift of sweat, so check out their volunteer opportunities to see how you could so generously donate your time, effort, and of course, sweat.
Whether you already know tons about bike mechanics and can work in the shop, wouldn’t mind learning about mechanics, can teach some educational stuff, or simply would like to lead a ride, let them know.
They can always use enthusiastic local residents.
