We have all heard that stress is a killer, but do we really know what that means? Stress actually physically changes the body in ways that decrease our longevity. There are receptors in our bodies that are linked to longevity. Those receptors are reduced in people with high levels of stress even if they are healthy in other areas of their lives such as weight and diet.
Luckily, there is a way that we can reduce our stress in just a few minutes a day and change our body for the better. The best way to reduce stress is through meditation. Meditation is not a religious experience although some people may believe it is. Meditation is a way to thoroughly relax your mind and body.
If you meditate for five to twenty minutes a day, you will significantly reduce your stress levels and regain your good health.
To meditate, sit in a comfortable position on the floor or mat with your legs crossed. Keep your back straight and breathe evenly. Concentrate on saying one word out loud or in your head. Keep focusing on the word. If anything else enters your mind, go back to thinking of the word. Some words that are commonly used are: om, kering, ram or shiriram. You can use any mantra or chant that you enjoy.
Another good activity for reducing stress is yoga. Yoga is a series of stretching exercises and poses that help you gain strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga can also help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
Yoga can be performed every day and it is excellent for all physical ability levels. Start out slowly and do not force your body to do anything that hurts or is uncomfortable. Over time, you will build up greater strength and flexibility.
Regular exercise can reduce stress. Exercise every day for at least twenty minutes. Walking after meals is beneficial to stress reduction and weight loss. Weight training builds muscle which burns fat and reduces stress.
Another crucial aspect of living a stress-free life is having healthy relationships. Analyze the relationships you have with your friends, family and co-workers. If it is not good, come up with a plan to make it better. If there are some negative people in your life, you may need to avoid them or reduce the amount of time that you spend with them. Keep it positive.
