I love frozen pizza- particularly those little cheap Totino’s ones. For some reason, the cheese on them tastes like yogurt to me, and I oddly love it. However, just because they’re cheap (like many store bought frozen pizzas) doesn’t mean you can’t turn them into an awesome pizza that tastes nearly as good as the ones from the restaurants, for a fraction of the price.
If you buy a cheese pizza, or a meat pizza, you have the perfect mold for creating a great pizza at home out of a frozen pizza. Since frozen pizzas are notorious for having minuscule amounts of cheese (or cheese with no flavor to it) the first thing you can do to really liven up a frozen pizza is add cheese of your own. I like to add shredded cheese that is purchased shredded already, like the Mexican or pizza blends, so you can get a full variety of cheeses. A handful of cheese can go a long way.
Sprinkling garlic powder or adding a few pieces of chopped garlic can work wonders for a store-bought pizza. So can adding some fresh or dried parsley flakes to the frozen pizza before cooking. Adding items in your house, like tomato slices, mushrooms, olives, or red onion, or even artichoke hearts, brings more flavor to a plain frozen pizza and gives it a fresh taste.
Add a little something to the crust before you cook it! Take a tablespoon of butter in a bowl, add a teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and a dash of parsley flakes. Melt all the ingredients in the microwave for 30 seconds, then stir. This gives you a great oil to coat the frozen crust with to make it more delicious and flavorful. Use a sauce brush to spread the oil on the crust, or dip a napkin in the bowl and spread the oil on the crust. Having a more deluxe crust on a blah pizza can turn your cheap pizza into a real treat.
Sprinkling a dash of sugar on the pizza prior to cooking it can really increase the flavor of the sauce, and deplete some of that harsh, salty sauce taste. Sugar lightly sprinkled on top of the pizza will not affect the flavor of the pizza toppings, but rather will make the pizza sauce far more delectable. These are just a few simple ways to take a cheap (even a buck) pizza into a lovely dinner without having to pay the restaurant price.
