October 15th 2010 the ill-fated reign of George Gillet and Tom Hicks over one of Britain’s most successful and storied soccer franchise Liverpool FC came to an inevitable and avoidable acrimonious end. After court rulings at the high court of London and a Texas court control was wrestle from one American to another.
NESV, the group that owns baseball’s Red Sox fronted by John Henry now owns Liverpool FC .So who are NESV and what does the future holds for Liverpool FC. John Henry says they are winners and they should be judge by their actions and not on any promise (which they are reluctant to make). This is a complete departure from Hicks and Gillet who rode into Liverpool with a bag full of promises and shamelessly broke them all.
This difference in style: is it enough to assuage the fears of the Liverpool fans, after all NESV is as American as Hicks and Gillet. As we move further away from the 15th of October sale date the legacy of the last ownership still hangs over the club. The current manager Roy Hodgson was appointed by the old board to replace a popular manager Rafa Benitez who won the club its fifth European title. After eight games Hodgson has made a disastrous start, Liverpool lie 19th in a twenty team league. His was not a popular appointment in the first place but because of the dysfunctional state of the club under Hicks and Gillet it was accepted with gritted teeth by the fans. The performance of the team so far has been worst than the results, discontent is spreading and his press utterances of Hodgson are bordering on the edge of the blasphemous for fans.
John Henry of NESV has stated for public record that they are winners and they want to compete at the top end of European soccer and they should be judge by there action. Manchester Utd has Sir Alex Fergusson, Chelsea Carlo Ancelotti, Arsenal Arsene Wenger, Barcelona Pep Guardiola, Real Madrid Jose Mourinho Inter Milan the old coach Rafa Benitez. These are the teams Liverpool FC will have to compete with to achieve the goals of the new owners and the expectations of the fans. NESV have there first test and also an opportunity to demonstrate to the fans what they about. Hodgson says he needs time .What they do with Roy Hodgson, an appointment of the old board will start to define there custodianship of Liverpool FC for the millions of fans world wide. Let’s hope they get it right.
