It probably doesn’t surprise you that I like the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I like it because it usually makes fun of my favorite target, the Republicans. I’m definitely a left-thinking Democrat, and I voted for Obama, but lately I don’t know what he and the Congress have been thinking. I agree that give the Democrats an advantage and they will surely mess it up.
One good thing about the Daily Show, unlike Fox News, they are willing to point out problems with the right as well as the left. No wonder they have become the favorite news source for young people, even though they say they are the “fake news.”
The other day they featured a story about the Food and Retail Worker’s Union, the only union that I was briefly a member of. I worked at a supermarket part-time while I was managing a restaurant next door to it. During that six months I never saw my union representative.
Let me state that all my family have worked union jobs. My mom was in the IBEW for 45 years. My grandfather was an organizer in the local boot and shoe worker’s union here in St. Louis. I’m about the only member of the family that wasn’t a union member all of his life.
But the Daily Show showed an important problem with the unions nowadays. The focus of the segment was with Wal-Mart, the biggest problem the unions have organizing today. Wal-Mart has a lot of employees and they don’t treat them very well. They work for low wages and most of them are under- insured or have no health insurance.
The Food and Retail Worker’s Union was picketing a particular Wal-mart over these issues. But the problem was that hey had hired scab, workers to walk the picket line. The workers also had no health insurance available for them as well as receiving minimum wage like Wal-Mart. The union representative had no answers as to why they were doing this.
Years ago when I worked at a convenience store this very same union tried to organize us. They had a picket line outside the store and at least they used out-of-work union workers from the automotive plant up the street. They crossed their own picket line and bought drinks from the store. They also picked up newspapers that the union drivers refused to carry across the picket line and brought them into the store for us. They told us that their beef wasn’t with us, the employees that they sympathized with.
