In my family we used to say “if it’s good don’t eat it.” In other words all healthy food tastes bad and unhealthy food tastes good. Another phrase was “No gain, no pain.” My guess it you have heard simliar phrases. I have developed two new phrases. Eating healthy can taste great! Exercise can be fun!
I know- you may be thinking I’m a little crazy. Let me tell you a little about me. I was forty pounds over weight and have tried four or five times to lose weight. Sound familiar?I would lose it be then gain it back. My guess is you have probably done somewhat the same thing. I have lost thirty-one pounds and I know this time I am going to keep it off. How do I know this? Because it’s been fun.
First of all I had to realize I was losing the weight for me. Not for others to praise me or be proud of me. Not because my life would change dramatically once I lost weight. I lost weight because I would feel better physically and emotionally and be able to dance without feeling shy.I facilitate spiritual retreats and I love to use dance movement as prayer.I also had to have other interests besides food. I focused on my writing and motivational speaking. I found that I didn’t depend on food for comfort, healing, or companionship.
Reflect on why you want to lose weight and have realistci expectations. Don’t do it for others or for an occassion of some kind.Develop other interests besides food. I found it helps if I’m not always focused on eating and how hungry I am.
Next I thought of healthy foods I liked. There were many. Yogert, fruit, V8 juice, spinich, etc. You might be surprised how many health foods you enjoy. Try and include all food groups. Take out all food that isn’t healthy. Have snacks like carrots, grapes, black berries, or anything healthy that you like.
Eat about every three hours and eat small portions. If you get hungry between meals eat yout snack. I found that drining water between meals helps. Studies have found it’s better to eat fruit on an empty stomach and not to drink water with meals.
What kind of exercise do you like? Make a list. Choose one and make a plan to do it every day. Maybe it’s walking, or riding a bike. What ever it is exercise at least forty-five minutes a day.You don’t have to do the same exercise every day. You might like to do jazzercise three times a week and walk or swim the other days. There are numerous ways to exercise. It’s important to make it something you enjoy because even though you enjoy it there will be days you won’t feel like exercising and that is probably the day you need to exercise the most.
Celebrate oyour success! You are taking care of you! That’s a great accomplishment! Remember this isn’t a diet. It’s your new life!!! Go ahead and live it!
