It’s that time of year again! The weather is changing, holidays are nearing and 2011 is just around the corner. So before I make my resolutions for next year I think it is only fair to look back at 2010. For starters, I had set more goals than ever before for myself in 2010. I told myself that I would see each one through instead of doing as I always do – setting goals and giving up shortly after.
Losing weight has been one of THE number one things on my list for quite some time (as I am very overweight for my height). My weight loss resolution for 2010 was to at the very least lose 30 lbs. I know that to some this probably sounds like a lot but I could stand to lose at least 100 lbs – so 30 lbs seemed like an achievable goal.
I did not begin to lose weight until July of this year (I spent the first half of the year achieving smaller goals). I was doing really great but unfortunately was met with many personal life challenges (death of my grandmother, moved twice, nasty breakup, new relationship, etc.). It seemed as though my weight loss efforts were doomed right out of the gate!
I DID manage to lose a total of 24 lbs over this summer. How did I drop that weight? I danced my ass off!
I am an enormous fan of Lady Gaga so I would pop in The Fame or The Fame Monster and as Gaga says, I would “Just Dance” from anywhere between 15 and 60 minutes per day. This opened up an entirely new world of exercise for me. I found that I was actually ENJOYING myself. I even went to YouTube and learned the dances to Bad Romance and Alejandro for exercise. It was a blast!
Plus, in addition to drinking lots of water as I usually do I began brewing a big batch of green tea each night. I boiled a pot of water, steeped the tea bags, let it cool before pouring into a large water bottle and then chilled it in the fridge overnight. I did not add any sugar! I always had my green tea bottle ready to go in the morning to enjoy throughout the following day.
Through dancing I managed to steadily lose weight over the course of about a month. BUT my downfall began when I had started exercising in place of smoking cigarettes (my top new year’s resolution was to quit smoking this year and I finally succeeded in 2010!). I had heard that quitting smoking leads to weight gain so I would exercise to try and avoid adding on extra pounds.
Everything was working out smoothly until I moved and my life turned upside down for a few months. I had less time for exercise and without cigarettes I managed to gain every bit of those pesky 24 lbs right back.
But as I look back on 2010 I am happy to have achieved most of my goals for the year. And as 2011 approaches I am now able to strictly get to work on battling the bulge. I have another round of blood work with my doctor before the year ends. We are trying to find out if there are any health problems contributing to my obesity.
I plan to begin the South Beach Diet in December. Hopefully by the end of 2011 I will be in much better shape.
