My family spent nearly three years in Germany. While there, we fell in love with the German people as well as their amazing cuisine. Coming back to America, we discovered that the German restaurants we once thought were so good, actually fell short of the authentic German taste.
Consequently, over the years I have tried to learn a bit of German cooking on my own. Although it will never be as good as the real thing, it comes as close or closer than the Americanized version often served in restaurants.
I make my German dishes from scratch most of the time. However, I’m not above trying out some of the mixes available in today’s marketplace as well.
One that I found to be good comes from Maggi Fix & Frisch. It is their Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix.
Hunter’s Schnitzel is also known as Jaeger Schnitzel. It is a rich, cream sauce soaked schnitzel that features mushrooms, herbs and spices. Although traditionally made with veal, it can also be done in pork or turkey.
Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix comes in a 1.06-oz package that weighs 30 grams. There are 3 servings per pack.
A serving represents about 1.5 tbsp. There are 35 calories per serving. However, none of those calories come from fat.
The mix contains no cholesterol or fat but does have 7 grams of carbohydrate, 1 gram of sugar and 580 milligrams of sodium. On the flip side, it provides 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of fiber. It has no other nutritional value.
Ingredients include canola lecithin, dried mushrooms, food starch, miscellaneous spices, mushroom extract, onion powder, paprika, parsley, rice flour, salt, sugar, sunflower oil and yeast extract. It also contains artificial and natural flavors, citric acid, guar gum and maltodextrin.
Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix recommends using pork for their dish. To make the most traditional way, one should choose boneless pork cutlets. You will also need 7-oz. of fresh mushrooms and 2 to 4 tbsp. of vegetable or olive oil and 1 cup of cream.
Here are the preparation suggestions:
First, wash and dry the pork cutlets. If they are thick, pound them out until they are no more than .25″ in thickness.
Properly clean the mushrooms. Slice them into thin sections from top to bottom.
Heat 2 tbsp. of oil in a skillet. Brown the pork cutlets lightly. Remove them and set them aside.
Bring the oil content back up to around 2 tbsp. Saute the mushrooms. Add in 1 cup of cream.
Pour the Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix into the mixture and bring the sauce to a boil. Then, as it starts to thicken, reduce the heat and simmer.
In a roasting pan, lay out the pork cutlets in a single layer. Pour the sauce mixture over the top. Bake the prepared dish in a preheated oven of 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. Serve alone or with other dishes.
For variation, try adding 2 tsp. of German mustard into the sauce.
Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix is a German product. It is imported by Euro-American Brands, LLC out of Paramus, New Jersey.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 4 stars. Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix is good, particularly for those just starting out with German cuisine.
Appearance: 4 stars: This dish looks every bit as appetizing as it tastes.
Nutrition: 3 stars. Unfortunately, Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix has a little nutritional value. On the other hand, it contains no fat or cholesterol. While the carb and salt intake are a bit high, used in moderation this mix shouldn’t cause much in the way of health issues.
Ease: 5 stars. This dish is simple to make if you follow the easy directions. However, it will make your guests believe you have been cooking in the kitchen for hours on end.
Packaging: 5 stars. Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix comes in a brown and yellow package with red and turquoise trim. A picture of the dish is shown on the front. The Maggi logo is prominently displayed in red with yellow print. A turquoise banner spells out the additional ingredients required to complete the dish. The packaging is odd sized and colorful. It should be easy to spot on store shelves.
Ease of storage: 5 stars. Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix comes in a flat package that measures a little over 6″ in length and almost 5″ in width. It is a larger sized package than most traditional sauces or gravies. Nonetheless, it is small enough to be easy to store almost anywhere including a kitchen cabinet, cupboard, pantry or drawer.
Availability: 2 stars. Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix is not widely distributed so it may take some hunt and miss tries before you find it. Try gourmet or German food stores rather than a traditional grocery mart.
Price: 4 stars. Maggi Fix & Frisch Hunter’s Schnitzel Seasoning Mix is a bit more expensive than most traditional sauce mixes. However, it is also well worth the price which is roughly double the average.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars. I’ll have this on hand when I can find it.
