Decks need attention yearly or at least bi-annually at the minimum. Maintaining these exterior rooms is a lot like painting and much of the preparation is the same. A deck that is not properly maintained can cost one down time in the spring and summer for repairs.
Here is how to easily maintain a deck and keep it looking new, year after year:
Tools needed: Industrial bleach, pump up sprayer, paint pan, paint roller, paint brush, putty knife and some good quality sealer or stain which ever you prefer. Wear old clothes, gloves and goggles when working with bleach.
Step 1: Cover any plants or shrubs with plastic before starting and remove all deck furniture. This is so the plants and furniture both will not be damaged when using the bleach.
Step 2: Scrape any heavy deposits of mold off the deck using the putty knife. Just a good topical scraping will do it is not necessary to take it down to the boards.
Step 3: Put one half gallon of bleach in the pump up sprayer to start then fill the rest up with water. Spray the deck down using the pump up sprayer and the bleach spray heavily where mold or mildew is evident.
After the porch dries check it and spray any missed spots again a stiff broom can be used to scrub if necessary.
Note: be sure when using bleach to use it in a sprayer that will be marked bleach only. This will keep a major accident down as bleach is very unstable and cannot be mixed with other chemicals.
Step 4: Rinse the deck with a water hose making sure it is rinsed well. Let the porch completely dry before moving onto the next step. The deck could be all day drying depending on the weather. Usually on a hot day it will take about six hours before it is ready to seal or stain.
Step 5: If sealing the deck put the sealer in a pump up sprayer just for the sealer. Spray it onto the deck and let it dry for twenty four hours before putting the furniture back on.
If one is using stain this can be put on with a roller and a paint brush. This will be done the same way as one would paint a wall in the house only this will be done on a flat surface. This should also be left alone to dry overnight.
Step 6: Remove the plastic covering the plants and put the furniture back on the deck and enjoy it for another year. Remember do it yourself and save.
