The simplest Halloween decorations can help create that creepy, spooky look around your home, but the cost of buying them can make your wallet shriek. Make this easy Halloween craft to create frightful fun in your home and save some pennies. This easy-to-make barbed wire garland is a great project for the kids and will add just the right touch to your Halloween decorating.
Materials Needed for Halloween Barbed Wire Garland
To make this easy barbed wire garland, you will need brown or dark gray yarn and glue. Craft glue or simple school glue will work. You will also need scissors and a bowl of water.
How to Make the Halloween Barbed Wire Garland
Cut two lengths of yarn–any length. I decided to make my garland approximately 48 inches long, so I cut two pieces of yarn at that length.
Knot the two pieces together and tie knots along the length of the two pieces every few inches. If you would like, you can twist the yarn as you tie knots in order to create a twisted barbed wire appearance. Continue tying knots until you reach the other end of the yarn.
Next you will need to cut several short lengths of yarn–approximately 1-2 inches in length. These will become the “barbs” on the barbed wire.
Tie these short pieces along the length of the “wire.” They may be spaced evenly or randomly–your choice. Add as many barbs as you would like to create the look you prefer. You may need to go back and cut the barbs shorter after you have tied them into place.
Finish the Halloween Barbed Wire Garland
The final touch for this Halloween barbed wire garland will be to soak it in a glue solution to stiffen it. Barbed wire is supposed to be stiff and wiry and the glue treatment will help achieve this look for the garland.
Put the entire yarn garland into the bowl of water, making sure it is completely immersed and wet. Add glue to the water. There is no specific amount, but the more glue, the stiffer the garland will be. Swirl the yarn garland around in the water to ensure a thorough soaking and allow it to sit for a few minutes.
Remove the yarn from the bowl, wring it out then stretch the garland out and hang it to dry. Once it is dry, it will be stiff and ready for use. Wrap your barbed wire around posts, railings, drape it along door ways and such to create fun and creepy decor for Halloween.
