In this article I want to tell you how you can make a reindeer ornament out of a flat piece of wood. You can make it any size that it can be for outside or inside the house. These instructions could be helpful to make a large reindeer to post out by the driveway. It will be something you’ll keep for years.
For this Project you will need:
Flat piece of wood
The process of making a wood reindeer is easy. Take your flat piece of wood and lay it on a flat surface. If you are a good artist go ahead and sketch out your reindeer, or if you can’t find a deer stencil. You can sketch out the whole deer, or most people just do the head, because it’s quicker and easier.
After sketching out your reindeer, go ahead and hang half of your wood over the edge of the table, and then clamp it down tight. Take your jigsaw, make sure you got your safety glasses on, and then trim around your pencil marks with the jigsaw. Be careful when cutting around the antlers, because the pieces get small and may become easy to break. When you have trimmed around all that you can get to, loosen up the clamps and turn the wood around, and then clamp down the wood again. Now you can cut out the rest of your reindeer.
Take your wood off the table and take your sandpaper to it. You want to make sure to sand off all the raw edges and marks on the face. You want the surface to be smooth and ready for paint.
To start off painting, you need to paint a base coat of brown. Make it any shade of brown you want to resemble the fur of the reindeer. Now you will want to paint the antlers a different shade then the fur. Finally you can paint the eyes, the noise, and finally the mouth. Most people like to paint the nose red, or even put a small red light on the tip for it can light up at night.
If you made the reindeer for outside, you can nail a wood stake in one side and put it in the ground, or if it’s small enough put a wire on it and hang it from the door.
