If you love the cozy feel of homespun and country Christmas decorating, you’ll love these wool needle felting Christmas ornaments. Nothing says country Christmas like these woolly ornaments! Here are the easy directions for three wool needle felting Christmas ornaments for you to make.
These needle felting Christmas ornaments are made with the waterless technique of needle felting. They are made by repeatedly stabbing loose wool roving with a special needle. The needle felting needle has barbs on the shaft that cause the loose wool roving to ‘felt’ together to make a solid piece. Wool needle felting is not a craft for young children. The felting needle is VERY sharp. Be sure as you work to never take your eyes off the felting needle, so you don’t accidentally stab your fingers.
To start the craft of wool needle felting you will need to buy needle felting needles, a foam work pad, and wool roving. For these wool needle felting Christmas ornaments you will also need: cookie cutters, ribbon, small glass beads, small bits of ripped cloth for bows, embroidery floss, sewing needle, material for hangers, scissors.
#1 Wool Needle Felting Christmas Ornaments – Christmas Lamb
Put a lamb shaped cookie cutter on top of the foam work pad. Lay a small amount of white wool roving inside the cookie cutter. Using a #38 gauge all purpose felting needle, stab or ‘felt’ the wool roving repeatedly. As you work, be sure to pull the wool away from the foam pad so it doesn’t attach to it. Add more white wool roving as needed to make the ornament thick enough. When you are finished felting the white wool roving, lay a small bit of black wool roving to the lamb’s face and feet. Felt the black so it attaches itself to the white of the lamb. Take the cookie cutter away. Sew on a small light colored glass bead for the lamb’s eye. Add a hanger through the back and sew on a ripped cloth bow.
#2 Wool Needle Felting Christmas Ornament – Christmas Tree
Lay green wool roving inside a Christmas tree cookie cutter and felt it. When finished felting, take the cookie cutter away to add the tree’s details. Lay a strand of white wool roving across the tree as a garland. Needle felt it in place. Ornaments on the tree are made with small balls of red, yellow and blue wool roving. The star is yellow, the tree trunk is black or brown wool roving. Felt each detail. Add a string hanger to the tree top.
#3 Wool Needle Felting Christmas Ornaments – Christmas Star
The Christmas star ornament is made with white wool roving. Words and designs are added with embroidery floss. Add glass beads for some sparkle.
