Having a Halloween party? A Thanksgiving dinner with friends? A Christmas meal with all the trimmings? No matter what the occasion you can easily make appetizer picks that match the theme of the party. Short picks for chunks of meat and cheese, long picks for shish kabobs, they can all feature your chosen theme.
Of course, you can use ordinary toothpicks for the appetizers or you can use plastic versions. Thin, short, wooden toothpicks have a slightly different look than large, round toothpicks. You can even cut your own small toothpicks by starting with a pack of wooden skewers. They can be the colored type or plain wooden ones. Make them the length you want by cutting them with sharp scissors or knife. It’s important that you cut all the pieces to the same size or they’ll look awkward as they are served.
Instantly give the toothpicks or skewers a holiday theme by using beads. Choose beads in colors that suit the occasion and glue one or more on the end. Hot glue works great to hold them quickly. Combine red, white and blue beads, green and red ones, or even orange and black beads to create a theme for the special occasion.
Toothpicks that already have a design on the end, like plastic versions, won’t allow for a bead. For these types, try foam shapes. Available in many colors you can purchase the foam already cut into shapes or in sheets you cut yourself. These are perfect for kids’ parties. For a more mature theme try flat wooden shapes. Paint them yourself or use them in their natural state.
Look around a craft store, a place that sells party supplies, or even a dollar-theme store to find still more choices in toothpick decorating. These places sell tiny toys, plastic novelties, miniatures and more. It’s easy to make toothpicks and skewers to suit any occasion by using these types of trinkets. These items can simply be glued to the ends of the sticks.
Many different stores sell assorted holiday things that can be attached to toothpicks and skewers. Cut the ring area from plastic rings and glue the novelty onto a toothpick. Glue on fake spiders, mini Santa’s, little Easter bunnies and similar holiday trinkets.
Making your own decorative appetizer picks is an easy way to add fun to the foods you’re serving. Use them to serve meats, cheeses, candies, donut holes, vegetables, fruits and more!
