If you have a small living area but have big style ideas on a low budget, keep an open feel with plenty of style points by making a glass table. Performing this project is a great way to get started with woodworking and will give you a lot of confidence to perform other great projects.
Making The Base of the Table and Getting The Glass
Take 1″x4″ pine or poplar boards and cut two pieces 4′ long and 2 pieces 14 1/2″ long. This will be the frame for your coffee table.
Attach one of the 14 1/2″ pieces to one of the 4′ long pieces by applying a bead of wood glue to the end of the 14 1/2″ piece. Nail through the 4′ piece to attach it with a finish nail gun that can be rented at a home improvement store. Repeat this until you have constructed the table frame.
Pick out 4 pre-made coffee table legs at a wood working store, that have a curve to them for a traditional look. Use screws 1/2 inch longer than the width of the legs to secure the inside corners of the table using a cordless drill.
Order a glass top that is 54″x20″ with beveled edges from a glass company.
While you are waiting for the glass to be cut (should only take a few hours to a day), take wood filler and fill the nail holes on the frame of the coffee table you have made using your finger. Take 150 grit sandpaper and lightly go over the entire surface of the table to remove any blemishes and take off extra wood filler.
Take the table outside and clean it with a damp, clean cloth. Paint the table with glossy black spray paint. Work in thin coats to make sure that the finish coat is shiny with no drips. You will probably need 3 coats of paint and will probably use the entire can of spray paint. Allow 1 hour of dry time between coats.
Install plastic no slide protectors on the dry table frame on the top of the frame corners and the middle of the frame. Set the glass top on the table frame and enjoy your custom made, high style coffee table.
This project should cost you under $100 for a piece of furniture that would otherwise cost over $250, and you made it yourself.
