Marcia Gay Harden is back as Agent Dana Lewis of the FBI for this week’s episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”
Harden appeared twice before as Agent Lewis, under the alias “Star Morrison,” for the season 7 finale episode “Raw” and the season 8 premiere episode “Informed.”
This episode of SVU opens up with Agent Lewis coming to Detective Benson’s apartment to request her help in running her own rape kit. She doesn’t want to involve the FBI, as she doesn’t want her supervisors to know she let her guard down. The remainder of the episode consists of Detective Benson and Stabler trying to convince Agent Lewis to fill them in on details about the rape, as the perpetrator has raped and killed another woman, an accountant.
Agent Lewis reveals that the man who attacked her did so in her bedroom, putting her in a sleeper-hold an injecting her with a paralytic substance to make her immobile; the same methods were used on the other woman, although the woman was murdered.
In their search for the killer and rapist, the detectives follow Lewis while she’s undercover against her wishes, leading them to a protest against a mosque being built at the September 11th attack-site, and several anti-government groups which are being monitored by the FBI, including the Sovereign Citizens Brigade and Patriots Against Tyranny. Through such organizations, the police track down the murderer and rapist of the accountant woman, who admits his guilt, however he denies having raped Agent Lewis. (While in a familiar pattern from previous episodes, Detective Stabler also ends up in the hospital as a result of Lewis’s intervening.)
Eventually Agent Lewis takes the stand to try and prove that the man in question did rape her, only to reveal that the man called her “a star,” which ticks in Detective Benson’s mind that this case was related to a previous case Lewis worked on as Star Morrison. In this previous case, Agent Lewis killed the son of a man in prison, Brian Ackerman. It’s revealed in the conclusion that Ackerman was connected to the groups outside of prison, and somehow orchestrated the rape of Agent Lewis as payback for his son’s murder.
Harden was nominated for the “Outstanding Guest Actress” Emmy Award in 2007 for her role as Agent Dana Lewis.
Hopefully she’ll continue to guest-star in future episodes, as viewers certainly enjoy a breather from typical story-lines in exchange for more high-profile cases related to the FBI.
