Mariah Carey as an American Idol judge? It seems possible, according to reports. American Idol and Mariah Carey are still in negotiations to make this happen, but, according to E!, there are still several sticking points that they have to work through.
You can’t help but wonder if one of them is how many times Carey will get to perform on the Idol stage during the next season. It seems, though, that, if Carey were to join the judges’ table, it would mean Shania Twain was unable to come to terms as well. This is just one more story about what could be happening behind the doors of American Idol, but, with the evolving negotiations, it might make the most sense when we talk about chemistry between the judges.
It still looks likely that Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler will take over the seat left open by Simon Cowell, and he would be sitting at one end of the table. Carey would step into the original role of Paula Abdul, and, when you think about it, there are certainly quite a few similarities the two of them have personality-wise.
Would a judges’ table of Carey, Tyler, and Randy Jackson be as interesting as fans of the show would be hoping for, though? For one thing, it would allow executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to get what he wants in a three-judge panel, and it would also create a situation where none of the judges are really “long-winded.” That seems to be a recipe to let the singers take back center stage on American Idol in the coming seasons, and that could be key to improving the stagnant ratings.
Bringing Mariah Carey into the fold seems much riskier than if they got a deal done with Shania Twain. Twain was a great mentor when she was on the show, and she was also a great judge when she sat in during the audition phase last year. That experience should go a long way with producers, but maybe we are overlooking what could be the most obvious stipulation in this whole selection process. Maybe producers want to put the people in place who would have the best chemistry with Jackson, and that presumably would be Carey and Tyler, which he has the utmost respect for after being in the business for quite a long time.
Either way, hopefully this is the last rumor before Fox finally makes an announcement to put an end to the wondering.
