Annapolis, MD Sept. 24 – The Maryland’s governor race is proving to be a spot of hope for Republicans in an overwhelmingly Democratic State. The race between current Governor Martin O’Malley and former governor Bob Ehrlich has been heating up as we recently pulled out of the primaries and the political battle really commences.
As a long time conservative, who normally sides with most of the republican views on the major issues, the chance to participate in an election where I feel like my vote may actually count for something is a big thing. As a long term resident of Maryland, like many conservatives, I often feel like my votes in local elections and national elections mean nothing. With the Democratic candidates winning by landslides in most elections a sense of defeatism takes hold at times. However, with Bob Ehrlich’s return to the governor’s race a sense of excitement can be felt in the conservative base in Maryland. I seem to notice more and more signs supporting Ehrlich being put up every day on my drive to work. It seems that it no longer is taboo to root for the Republican candidate, I no longer feel scared to place a sticker on my car or sign in my yard backing the candidate.
Finally I feel like I can voice my opinion of disbelief that just a few years ago a man that was Mayor of, by many measures, one of the worst cities in the country would be voted to run our state. High murder rates, lots of condemned/abandoned buildings, huge crime issues…. Yeah that sounds like someone that should take that winning work and transfer it to the entire state.
Now, I have nothing against Baltimore and I certainly do not believe that Robert Ehrlich has all the answers. However, I don’t see what credentials the Democratic nominee is bringing to the table that would convince me of his ability and vision to lead this state. Maryland, in my opinion, is amazingly expensive with very high home prices, sky high taxes, and traffic to rival the nation’s worst areas. All I can do is hope that a conservative candidate would try and do something to change that direction.
According to Bob Ehrlich’s campaign page Ehrlich will be focused on creating jobs, balancing the states unsustainable budget, limiting illegal immigration, and schools. Lofty and admirable goals. Do I believe he will achieve them all? Heck no, but I do think he will try and I believe he will do his best to decrease the spending that is crippling not only Maryland but the nation. Who knows, maybe this will be the stepping stone for a run to the White House for Bob Ehrlich.
As one of the severely outnumbered conservatives in Maryland, I look on with pride as a Republican candidate shows not only the ability to lead but that actually has the chance to lead in this deeply blue state.
