Your Barbie is probably like many women in the real world: we own too many shoes! What do you do with all of them? Your doll absolutely needs every single pair, but what she needs even more, is a place to store them! You can make Barbie a nice shoe organizer by using empty matchboxes. The shoe closet is really easy to make, but when it’s finished, it will look like you purchased it!
The matchboxes you use must be the kind that are small and have a drawer-like piece that slides in and out of an outer sleeve. It’s okay if the boxes have logos or other designs but all the boxes need to be the same size. Stack and glue the matchboxes together until the stack is as tall as you want the shoe closet to be.
Craft stores feature a large variety of small, thin pieces of wood. You’ll need three pieces to complete the shoe closet. Two pieces must be the same size and one will be smaller. You don’t have to know anything about working with wood to use the small pieces to make the shoe closet. The two identical pieces will make the sides of the organizer. The width of these should be close in size to the length of the matchboxes. Although the wood pieces can be slightly wider than the matchbox is long, they can’t be narrower than that.
Glue the wooden pieces so that one is attached to the side of the matchbox stack and the other is glued to the opposite side. If the wood is slightly wider than the matchboxes are long, position the wood so that one edge of each piece aligns with the front edges of the matchboxes. Even though you haven’t added the top to the organizer the look, so far, should be that of a dresser with sides and drawers.
If the wooden side pieces are a little taller than the stack of matchboxes place the extra space at the bottom and align the tops of the side panels with the edges of the top matchbox.
Choose a piece of wood to attach to the top of the shoe closet. It can be larger than the rest of the piece. Glue it in place. Now attach a small bead to each “drawer”.
If needed, cut a piece of cardboard and attach it to hide the excess area below the final matchbox. These easy drawers can hold high heels, slippers, flip-flops and other small shoes for a Barbie or other doll.
