Matt Barnes, who is averaging 9.8 points per game, ended the game vs. The Timberwolves with 24 points and 100% shooting accuracy. That includes 2 for 2 on field goals, 5 for 5 on 3 point shots, and 5 for 5 on free throws. He also managed to grab 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. On top of that, no turnovers were caused by Barnes.
What makes this such a big deal is that Matt Barnes is the third player in 25 years to get 24+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds all while shooting perfect from everywhere. The other two players to achieve such stats in one game are Gary Payton and Charles Barkley.
What else makes this pretty interesting is this: Matt Barnes is not even a starter for the Lakers! The Lakers current starting line up is Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Derek Fisher, and Lamar Odom (in Andrew Bynum’s absence). However, the Laker’s bench has been dubbed ‘The Renegades’ by head coach Phil Jackson due to how dominant they have been playing.
It’s hard to say for sure, but it seems as though the Lakers bench could have a shot at the playoffs all by themselves. With Andrew Bynum’s return (likely within the next month), Lamar Odom will return to ‘The Renegades’ as well.
Shannon Brown has been the defining Renegade so far this season averaging 10.7 points, 1.90 rebounds, and 1 assist per game; not to mention an athleticism that only few can match. Matt Barnes has been relatively quiet this season since he opted out of his contract with Orlando and made the switch to LA, but this certainly refutes such comments as “he’s too skinny, can’t defend, can’t shoot”.
