Matt Hughes of Storm Chasers passed into death months ago. Yet the Matt Hughes Storm Chasers death came almost out of nowhere to fans just last night. Those who hadn’t heard about what happened were stunned at the end of the last episode, as the show officially disclosed his passing at the end. Since the episode was titled “Dedication” and focused on the late Storm Chaser almost exclusively, the hints were there. Yet many are taken aback to hear of Hughes’ death, and are wondering how it happened.
This incident didn’t happen recently, as the meteorologist was found dead on May 26, 2010, according to the Discovery Channel. But apparently, the news wasn’t that public, since many only just heard about it by watching his last Storm Chasers episode.
The Hughes did not die during filming, as some may have assumed. In fact, he was apparently nowhere near a storm when it happened, although the exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Discovery Channel said in their press release that he died from “an injury unrelated to his chasing activities.” Therefore, rumors are swirling online as to what that could really mean, and how Hughes really did die.
The primary rumor is that the death was self-inflicted, and that depression made him take his own life. Internet research revealed that on June 7, an employee at Hughes’ KAKE-TV channel in Wichita wrote about how he tried to kill himself.
According to Aaron Blaser, Hughes attempted to kill himself on May 14 and was then taken to the hospital. But further complications then arose, leading to his death on May 26. Blaser wrote that he was suffering from depression, and that “an accumulation of issues at home” were piling up before the end.
Now that the announcement has been made on the show, more attention and scrutiny will be paid toward these claims. Although it happened in the early summer, the family, show and network were able to actually keep this private – and give everyone time to start healing.
With the healing process now six months old, the show will now start paying further tribute to their fallen star. After showing his last chase last night, Storm Chasers will show the aftermath of his demise in future episodes and depict how friends and family managed to cope.
Until now, the aftermath of Matt Hughes’ death was a private affair, yet Storm Chasers is now ready to have a more public farewell. The aftermath will be shown Wednesday night at 10 p.m. est on the Discovery Channel.
