While I was recently back in Connecticut for my sister-in-law’s wedding we had a lovely rehearsal night dinner with all the prospective families on the eve of the nuptials at Matteo’s Italian Grill in New Milford Connecticut. Matteo’s is “a family owned restaurant with years of experience in fine Italian cuisine.” Matteo’s is a restaurant, bar, has an in house bakery and also hosts private parties, events, and does catering. Located on Rte 202 in New Milford, Matteo’s has a variety of tasty food options and could be the next place for your rehearsal night dinner.
What is Italian: Matteo’s prides themselves on serving “fine Italian cuisine,” and while it is true that they do serve a variety of Italian options, their full menu may be a little more gentrified than that. Matteo’s dinner menu on the evening that we were there had pasta, calamari, mozzarella, garlic bread, pizza, calzones, and antipasto for sure. However other options on the Matteo’s regular dinner menu included buffalo wings, chicken Caesar salad, bacon cheeseburgers, and N.Y. Sirloin. Still, I’d call the Matteo’s menu a general dinner menu with an Italian emphasis.
Group Experience: When we were out at Matteo’s Italian Grill it was for a wedding rehearsal dinner. We had our own semi-private room (our own adjacent area seperated by a wall, though no doors) and the tables were all smashed together for the bride and groom, parents and small bridal party, groomsmen party, and their spouses. The service was always brisk and while the service wasn’t memorable by way of nothing over-the-top being done, it also wasn’t negatively memorable, which, in my book, is always a plus.
Food: Because we had reserved the space and the event was pre-paid, we had a selection of dishes from which to choose. Matteo’s actually put out an ample buffet for us and they kept new food coming out anytime something ran low. The food was pretty good; rich and heavy; maybe too heavy for some. But after my recent months in the Low Country where I’d been living off of cereal of late, the quality of the Matteo’s dining experience was welcome indeed. A couple different Italian preparations of chicken, some beef, pasta, salads, fruit, and bread were all available at the buffet.
Overview: If you’re looking for comfort food up the 202 in New Milford Connecticut, Matteo’s is one option for you. While the cuisine I sampled may have been a bit too rich for some palates, the prices are moderate, the ambiance was good, and the grounds make Matteo’s a good pick for places to take your sweetie on a Saturday night, pop open a bottle of wine, and toast to life!
