Matthew McConaughey was born November 4, 1969. He is the youngest son of a gas station owner (father) and substitute school teacher (mother). His father once played for the Green Bay Packers. Growing up in Longview, Texas, he graduated from high school in 1988. He attended the University of Texas in Austin. While attending there, he began appearing in short television commercials. He worked with Ben Affleck in Richard Linklaters “Dazed and Confused.”
After that, Matthew appeared in movies like “Angels in the Outfield”, “The Next Generation” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” His first really big break came, when he got the spot as “Jake Brigance” in the film “A Time to Kill.” The movie was based on the John Grisham book, by the same title.
In the later part of 1999, McConaughey was arrested on disturbing the peace and possession of cannabis. He was found late at night nude in his home, playing music very loudly. He was officially charged with disturbing the peace and the cannabis charge was dropped. He pleaded guilty to the disturbing the peace and was fined $50.
In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, he appeared as a lead actor in movies like “Contact”, “U571”, “The Newton Boys” and “EdTV.” Then he appeared in the feature film “Sahara”. He played the star character of Dirk Pitt. The movie was based on the book, by Clive Cussler. Although the movie opened as number one and took in an initial $18 million in it’s first weekend, it was considered a financial disaster.
Matthew has a compassionate side to his character. During the flooding, after hurricane Katrina, he set out to rescue stray pets left stranded. He even rescued a cat that had been sprayed with hairspray, by two youths trying to set it on fire.
McConaughey has a motto that he likes to use called, “Just Keep on Living.” He has a foundation called, “j.k. livin foundation.” It is set up to help teenage kids make wise decisions on active lives and healthy choices. He practices what he preaches. He is very active physically. He was captured using a Big Kahuna Stick on a long board. He has also participated in a triathlon.
Recently, Matthew has began to direct music videos. He directed the video “Playing the Part.” This was off the country artist Jamey Johnson’s double album called, “The Guitar Song.” Along with this comes the report, that he stepped on to Hollywood Boulevard wearing an iron mask, with a blue bandanna over his mouth. He was on the strip to direct the music video. He wanted to remain incognito. However, the mask drew more attention, than it would of without it.
Although he loves acting, it is apparent that he drifting more and more towards directing as well. You might soon see Matthew playing the lead role in the movie, “The Monkey Wrench Gang.” The movie will be directed by “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke.
Although not married, he lives with his girlfriend, Brazilian designer and model Camila Alves, in Malibu, California. They have two children Levi and Vida.
