Now in its seventh season, the psychic show “Medium” on CBS has managed to succeed where others have failed. Very few psychic dramas have been able to master story lines and family drama the way that “Medium” has. The best episode of the seventh season came in the form of a skin graft in “Talk to the Hand”.
While the regular episodes revolve around Allison’s dreams of danger, this one varied by using a skin graft on a burn on Allison’s hand. The skin was from a woman who was murdered and leads police to a funeral director operating a twisted little scheme with an organ harvesting doctor.
One of the best parts of “Medium” is the choice of music for each episode. This time it was the song “Hands All Over” by Maroon 5, and it was the most fitting use of a song in any TV episode I’ve seen. Every time Allison got a message from her hand, or the new skin on her hand, parts of the song would play loudly.
Throughout the episode Allison’s hand seemed to have a mind of its own. Grabbing remote controls on TVs and flipping through stations in what seemed a random manner, Joe was worried Allison was having after effects from her brain tumor. As the only non-psychic in the Dubois family, Joe always tends to leap to the logical instead of the supernatural. He’s usually proven wrong, as he was this time. In his efforts to care for Allison, she finds out about the skin graft being taken from a dead person and things start to come together.
Although not a psychic, Joe often gets some of the best lines of the show. At one point Allison is in the funeral home where the unlawful organ harvesting is taking place and her hand attempts to show her proof. Trouble is her hand goes for the pants of a corpse being prepared for a funeral when the widow walks in on what looks like Allison molesting her loved one. When Allison complains about thinking she’s nuts, Joe explains the cons of putting one’s hand inside the pants of a body being prepared for a funeral.
Luckily the skin on Allison’s hand has a perfect memory of what happened to the rest of her body and who did it to her. In a climax at the District Attorney’s office Allison’s hand finds the final piece of evidence needed to put her killer and accomplice away for good.
Meanwhile, middle daughter Bridgette learns a tough lesson from the ghost of a soccer coach. He seems very harsh when he speaks to her, but Bridgette has a harsh personality. Sometimes she needs to hear that she’s lazy, which is what the coach called her.
I found myself waiting for the funky music of Maroon 5 during the episode, and was never disappointed with the use of the song. The strong beats of the song jived perfectly with the plot and told us everything we needed to know that was coming next.
It may not have been the scariest episode of “Medium”. Not even close, but it was one of the most well put together episodes of the hit show. After seven seasons this psychic TV show proves it still has plenty of life left in the tank.
