Viktor Bout, allegedly a Russian KGB officer, will be extradited to the US after a court in Thailand made the ruling. Bout made all of his money shipping weapons (bombs, guns etc…) to “conflict zones.” A person like that knows a lot of powerful people, especially in Russia whose government has previously tried to have him released.
Bout is/was basically an influential, rich terrorist who wanted to kill Americans, like a lot of the terrorists we hear of these days. His defense, however, is that he is being framed for something he didn’t do. He feels he is sort being used by America for the problem of “global trade in illegal arms.”
I suppose it’s difficult for us (I wonder why? hmmmm) to think someone is not guilty when they have helped the Taliban, Angola and the like. The former President Charles Taylor (of Liberia) who is dealing with his own charges of war crimes has been known to say that he also used Viktor Bout for gunrunning – and he (Taylor) lead a bloody, brutal regime over West Africa, but “Thousands of limbless victims are part of Bout’s legacy.”
We want Viktor Bout to be guilty because we want him to pay for his crime(s). He was caught in Thailand, and now it’s our turn. But the beauty of this country, America, is that you are innocent until proven guilty, and without concrete proof, we don’t really know whether Bout is guilty or not. I do, however, have my own opinion, even without a court decision, and I can tell you, the outcome for Bout ain’t good.
