The Ebay auction of Michael Grimm’s signature fedora has come to a close. After fifty bids the hat was won by Jan Thornton, 1978 alumni from California Baptist University for $1,722.
According to Thornton’s post on Grimm’s face book page she was surprised and excited to have won Michael’s trademark hat, adding she had been prepared to go even higher in the bidding. Thornton who is employed as an administrator for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will receive the never washed autographed good luck fedora and two charities in Mississippi will receive the money.
Fans of Grimm are familiar seeing the Southern Soul singer and latest winner of America’s Got Talent performing with the hat pulled down low. This is the same hat Michael wore on “Ellen” when he proposed to then girlfriend now fiancé Lucie.
The hat Grimm wore when he won the million dollar prize on America’s Got Talent however is not the hat that was auctioned off but one from the NBC wardrobe department.
During his competition on AGT, Grimm preformed only one time without a hat. Grimm sang the Al Green hit, “Tired of Being Alone”. The semi finals saw Grimm back with his signature fedora singing the Joe Cocker/Tom Jones hit, “You Can Leave Your Hat On”.
Grimm has made no bones about the fact that he grew up poor in Mississippi, raised by his grandparents. He started singing in bars and honkey tonks at twelve and his lifelong dream was to make it as a singer and help his grandparents.
Now that his dream has come true he wants to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and he has started by auctioning off his hat for them. Michael, hats off to you.
