The Michigan State vs. Iowa game is extremely important for the Spartans when it comes to the 2010 BCS standings. As the Big Ten Conference schedule winds down for Michigan State this season, their game against Iowa will be the best chance for the Spartans to move up in the BCS. It might also be their last chance to control their own destiny, because after the week 9 games, they will play some of the weaker teams in the Big Ten this season. That will mean that if they don’t make their move this week, the Spartans will have to hope other schools start losing.
According to the MSU schedule, they play No. 18 Iowa on Saturday before having Minnesota, Purdue and Penn State finish out their 2010 season. Iowa is 5-2 right now, with Penn State and Purdue at 4-3 right now, but Minnesota is now 1-7 in 2010. The Michigan State vs. Minnesota game should be an easy win for the Spartans, but it is going to really punish them in the strength of schedule computations that the computer ranking systems have. It makes their game against Iowa a must-win, and it also needs to be something that makes voters across the country take notice in the Coaches’ Poll and the Harris Poll.
The Big Ten standings have Michigan State on top right now, aided by wins over Wisconsin and Michigan this year. Those two games were very important for this Spartans team, but the schedule makers didn’t put Ohio State in their path this year. That could be a good and bad fact at the same time, because while they don’t have to risk potentially losing to the Buckeyes, they also don’t get the prestige that would come from a potential win over the Buckeyes either. It could have led to a very interesting end of the Big Ten schedule if both teams had remained undefeated, but Ohio State saw their season uprooted by Wisconsin.
The Michigan State vs. Iowa game takes place on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 12:30 p.m. PT (3:30 p.m. ET). It will be broadcast on either ABC or ESPN, depending on your location in the country, and it’s a game where people don’t want to count out the Iowa Hawkeyes. There is a reason that they are still a top 20 team in all of the college football polls, with only a one-point loss to Wisconsin and a tough seven-point loss to Arizona on the road. Iowa could still make it into a big time bowl game as well, but they need to beat Michigan State and then Ohio State on Nov. 20 if they want that to happen.
