People have tried to sum up what the Mission is all about. If we boiled down all that the Mission is, only one word comes up and rings true: community. From the people and stores to the murals and language on the street, the Mission is definitely a taste of something entertaining and enriching. That is why I hope to be able to show you around to all that she has to offer!
Let’s take for example a fact that had been overlooked for sometime. The fact that there was no formal farmer’s market established in the Mission. Sure, there is the Alemany, but that isn’t in the heart of the Mission. Debuting six weeks ago, the Mission Community Market was born to fix that mistake.
Staffed by many local Mission volunteers, this non-profit organization has filled this niche that had been desperately needed. As further proof of the community spirit that permeates this area, they have been sponsored by other non-profits and local businesses in the area. And it is a market that is more. There are live performances, arts and crafts booths as well as locally prepared foods. In addition to that, there is an after-school program open to middle and high school students in the area.
I spoke with Jeremy, the market director, while we ate an apple from a local vendor there as we spoke about the need of a community market in the Mission. The array of fresh fruit and veggies were a welcomed sight. They even had a raw milk vendor present.
Jeremy plans to have the vendor numbers pick up, as he is hoping to see cart vendors who participate in the La Cocina program, a program legitimizing local entrepreneurs who operate from carts. I am sure to return next Thursday!
