If you’re a video gamer and haven’t tried a MMO(massively multiplayer online game), then I highly recommend you do so. There are so many awesome games out there that you are sure to find one that “tickles your fancy”.
Most online games cost around $14.99 per month to play, but if you’re not into paying to play, there are still a few games worth checking out. Here’s a few of the more popular online games.
World of Warcraft (WOW): With over 13million players and counting WOW is the largest MMO out there today. With people of all ages playing, and multiple content expansions this game will continue to grab the attention of gamers for years to come. In this magical world you can play as a number of mystical creatures, and choose from a wide variety of classes to play. Whether you enjoy questing, role playing, or battling your friends, this game has what you’re looking for. That is unless you don’t enjoy playing in a cartoon world with hundreds of 9 year olds calling you a “noob”. ($14.99 monthly fee)
EverQuest 2: This game puts in on a magical island, where mystical powers and adventures are abundant. With tons of classes and species to customize this game offers a wide array of play style. There are no pvp(player vs player) features in this game, but as far as role playing and grinding go, this game has it all. The only real downside to this game, is that some players review that it run’s slow on even some of the most of to date PC’s. ($14.99 monthly fee)
Star Wars Galaxies: This game throws you right into the Star Wars universe. You can play as any of the 9 classes. There are plenty of species and character customization features to choose from, and with plenty of quest content so you’ll never run out of things to do. This game is in its 7th year, and has about half of its servers shut down, but a few servers still maintain an abundant population of players. This game has guilds, role playing, pvp battle fields, and tons of planets to explore. If you are a Star Wars fan, I highly recommend this game for you. ($14.99 monthly fee)
Guild Wars: This free to play online game only requires that you buy the initial software to play. Guild Wars has a giant community of players, and allows you to team of with your buddies to complete quests and go on adventures. With plenty of ways to customize your character, and plenty of gear to equip, you’re sure to have plenty of fun. There is currently a Guild Wars 2 announced and in the works, and although you cannot bring your old character into the new game, you can receive “rewards” for achievements in the first Guild Wars. This game focuses mainly on questing more than anything else. I recommend waiting for the new Guild Wars 2 to come out if you want to play this game. (free to play, no monthly fee, must purchase GW software)
RuneScape: This game places you in the mid-evil time period with knights, wizards, and monsters. This game is rather low budget, but still provides plenty of content for the occasional and serious gamer. Have fun running around this make believe world and pretend that you’re a brave knight or a mystical wizard. And if that’s not your thing, you can always be a woodcutter or a blacksmith. This game does not require a download of any kind, and can be accessed straight through your browser window. (free to play, no monthly fee)
Star Wars, The Clone Wars Adventures *and* Free Realms: Both of these games require a download and are played right in your browser window. They are free to play, except for if you actually want to get anything cool, or participate in any of the better mini-games available. These games are both “mini-game” based online worlds, and do not really offer much in the way of customization or game content other than min-games. (free to play with the option to pay for better content and mini-games)
That covers a lot of the major games out there, but there is also Star Trek Online, The Matrix Online, super hero games online, and several other strategy based online games. BioWare has a new game coming out this spring called “Star Wars: The Old Republic”, and this game promises to take the MMO gaming experience to a whole new level with fully voiced game play, and a unique combat system. Keep your eyes open for this game, and in the mean time try out a couple of these other great MMO games.
