French tennis star Gael Monfils rocked the world of sports by taking down Swiss tennis great Roger Federer in the 2010 Paris Masters (BNP Paribas Masters) semi-final match. Although the match was not won easily, Monfils held his own to beat Federer in three sets: 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Monfils meets Sweden’s Robin Soderling in Sunday’s final match.
Unlike women’s tennis that is no stranger to diversity thanks to the dominant Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, until recent years, ethnic diversity has been noticeably absent from the top ranks of men’s professional tennis. Like the Williams sisters, athletes such as Monfils, fellow French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the U.S.’s own James Blake-regulars on the grand slam circuit-provide inspiration for up and coming players of all walks of life interested in becoming major players in the exiting world of professional tennis.
