Montrose, Minnesota is a small town in the Midwest that does not have much to offer. Middle and high school students have to go 25 minutes to Buffalo for school, there is only one intersection with a traffic light, and you have to go out of town to buy groceries. Two miles to the west on US Highway 12 is Waverly, Minnesota which is the former hometown of former US Vice President and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey. Red’s Cafe and The Great Northern are the two full service restaurants in town and you can walk from one end of town in approximately 15 minutes. There is, however, an institution in Montrose that locals and visitors frequent. The Ugly Bar sits along US 12 about 50 yards from the one traffic light. It is known to bikers around the Midwest. Even though “The Ugly” is known as a biker bar, you do not have to be a biker to be welcome there. The staff is friendly and hospitable and there is an off sale liquor store located behind the bar.
People from the nearby communities come by The Ugly to quench their thirsts and to take a load off their feet. They often show Vikings and Twins games on the televisions. Like most bars, The Ugly has its regulars who come by as well as a lot of conversations. The Ugly is one of the few places in Montrose where people can socialize. It is the happening spot in a small Midwestern town. They offer a small menu of burgers, pizzas, and appetizers to eat while washing down a beer. They often have events at the bar such as meat raffles, bands, and DJs. They also charter bus trips to casinos. When you have spent the day fishing in some of the lakes, you can come by and celebrate or drown your sorrows on the day’s catch. In the winter months it is not uncommon to see the parking lot filled with snowmobiles mixed with the cars and pickup trucks.
The one thing that is apparent is that the locals who support the area teams will display their love for their teams and the games are shown on the televisions. There are three TV sets in the bar one Big screen located near the pool table and two old school TVs by the bar. They feature a shot of the week and shot of the month. During Viking games they will pass out purple jello shots when the Vikes score a touchdown and after they win. Many Bike runs begin and end at The Ugly. Wednesday nights feature a poker tournament and they also sell pull tabs to benefit the Montrose Lions Club. There are two video games, a dart board, and a small putting hole to entertain the patrons. A frequent site at The Ugly during summer weekends are some of the classic cars that come to the parking lot. There is even a pool table for you to shoot pool.
There may not be much in the small town of Montrose, Minnesota but there is a place that is a great place to unwind. If you happen to visit Montrose please stop by the Ugly Bar and if Heidi is working make sure to say hello to her.
