You feel it, don’t you? There’s some sort of void. Something missing in your life. Sure, you can fill it temporarily with friends, family, school, work, entertainment, etc. But eventually, it fades away. You’re left longing for more. It doesn’t matter how much you fill yourself with those things. It always ends the same way.
Why is that? Why do we feel this way? Why is there this inner longing for satisfaction that can never be fulfilled? The Bible tells us: it’s because God created us for the purpose of knowing and worshiping our Creator. Romans 1 talks about the plight of mankind, that we the created have rejected the Creator. So instead of worshiping the God who made us, we turn to the idols of our hearts and bow down to them.
But these things, they leave us feeling so empty inside. NE Patriots’ star quarterback said a few years ago that “there’s got to be more…” I mean, if anyone was going to feel satisfied with life, you would think he would, right?
I know one example may not convince many people, but all I ask is that you examine yourselves. If you’re really honest, you know that there’s something missing. You know we were made to live for something so much more. Ecclesiastes 3:11 talks about how God has placed eternity in our hearts. There is something that is truly soul-satisfying and eternal. It’s a relationship with Jesus Christ. He said it himself in John 4:7-15. We see our temporal satisfaction even in our physical bodies. We hunger, so we eat. But a few hours later, we are hungry again. We thirst, so we drink. But a few hours later, we need to be re-filled. Jesus is offering an eternal spring of water that will keep you satisfied forever.
