When you go camping, hiking, mountain climbing or hunting you need nutritious meals to keep up your energy, but you also need foods that are easy and fast to prepare, and ones that are lightweight so you don’t get too weighed down.
These kinds of foods are hard to find. My husband and I looked and looked, and ended up buying several different such freeze dried meals made by Mountain House, available at our local Walmart store. We were impressed with the selection of meals available, and they retailed for around $5.80 per bag.
The Mountain House Potatoes & Beef with Onions is one of the meals that we purchased, and this was very impressive in many ways. The bag weighs a mere 4.34 ounces, and serves two people. Obviously when you are carrying everything on your back, you try to carry as little as possible. These meals make that easy!
The large bag has a zipper style closure, and to prepare the Mountain House Potatoes & Beef with Onions you simply open the top, pour boiling water into the bag, zip the top closed, and let the meal cook (or rehydrate), that is it! The bag is pleated at the bottom, so this also can serve as your bowl, no need to carry around paper plates, you only need some plastic flatware.
The ingredients in the Mountain House Potatoes & Beef with Onions are quite impressive. They include:
Potatoes, cooked beef (beef, flavoring, salt), nonfat dry milk, modified cornstarch, dehydrated onions, beef base (roasted beef and concentrated beef stock, hydrolyzed (corn gluten, soy, corn and wheat) protein, dried whey, natural flavoring, yeast extract), salt, sugar, corn oil, spices, caramel color, and garlic powder. Contains: milk, soy, and wheat.
One serving contains only 260 calories, 6 grams of fat, 2.5 grams of saturated fat, zero grams of those bad trans fats, 30 milligrams of cholesterol, 850 milligrams of sodium, 38 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 6 grams of sugars, and12 grams of protein.
If you can boil water, you can prepare a delicious and nutritious meal when you buy Mountain House Potatoes & Beef with Onions. All you need is two cups of boiling water, and you only need to wait for 8-9 minutes, and you will have a good tasting dinner without any work! True, the price of these meals is a little high, but this one is full of tender beef, and considering it is made with dehydrated foods, it really tastes pretty good.
We have decided to buy a dozen of the Mountain House foods to have on hand in case of an earthquake or other emergency. I am going to put some plastic flatware in a mini zip-lock style bag and tape them to the Mountain House bags, and we will be prepared if the need should arise. My only complaint with the Potatoes Beef & Onions is that it is a little too salty for my tastes, but my husband likes the flavor and the salt does not bother him like it does me. Otherwise, the meal has a good flavor and does not taste like your typical camping food. I highly recommend the Mountain House Potatoes Beef & Onions meal.
