Saving Silverman is a comedy about three high school friends Darren Silverman (Jason Biggs), Wayne (Steve Zahn), and J.D. (Jack Black). The three friends don’t have much luck with the ladies, despite being in a sweet Neil Diamond tribute band complete with sparkly shirts. Then, Darren meets Judith (Amanda Peet). Judith completely controls Darren’s life, even requiring him to get butt cheek implants.
The real fun starts when Darren and Judith get engaged and Judith forbids him from seeing Wayne and J.D. Darren’s friends are not willing to let him go easily and come up with a plan that you know is going to go wrong. Wayne and J.D. kidnap Judith and fake her death by pushing her car off a cliff. Of course Judith escapes from their basement and they have to come up with another plan. Their next plan features the great Neil Diamond himself.
The combination of Jack Black and Steve Zahn makes for some hilarious moments. The two actors feed off each other and are really the stars of the show. Black and Zahn make the writers look good by making all of their lines funny. There are some great exchanges between the two while they are breaking into Judith’s house that are sure to make you laugh.
The casting for the movie is excellent. Jack Black and Steve Zahn are fantastic. Jason Biggs is great as a sensitive, former male cheerleader. Amanda Peet, as Judith, is perfect as the dominating, controlling, and super hot girlfriend. R. Lee Emery is a natural as a fresh out of prison former football coach. And, Neil Diamond does a great job of playing himself.
My Grade: B
If you haven’t seen Saving Silverman yet you should rent it and check it out for yourself. If you are a Jack Black fan you will enjoy this movie, and Steve Zahn is hilarious as well. I recommend this movie with some pizza and beer.
