When I see a Smart Car running around town my first reaction is, ‘oh man is that a cute little car,’ and then I start thinking about the practicalities of everyday life. I can on one hand see some distinct advantages to having less room for people and things!
It would never come to pass that someone wanted to borrow your Smart Car to haul some firewood. It is also neat to be able to say “I am sorry my car only has room for me and that attractive redhead over there!
So you would rarely be called upon to do anything where there was a lot of hauling involved. On the other hand you will have a nice little car that gets impressive fuel mileage and is a real head turner at an intersection!
There are at least six of these roaming around town near my home and I can tell you for certain that once they are up to speed these little babies seem to really fly! They look like bumper cars on steroids as they round the corner literally on two wheels! They are nimble and simple.
Many people are under the impression that these little cars are not very fast but I am here to tell you that is all wrong. Don’t get me wrong it is not the car to take over to that show called “Pinks All Out” a drag racing program. But for buzzing around town and getting literally a few things at the supermarket it is the perfect car!
The Smart for Two cars are all very affordable but the Pure Coupe is their least expensive car on the market. For just $11,990 base price you can be cruising in fuel efficient style! If you need comforts like Air Conditioning then you will have to add that for about $600. One neat feature is that the plastic body panels are interchangeable so you can edit the look of your Smart Car anytime you want to!
I don’t really think people know that these are made in France and that they have a really high tech little 1.0 Liter power plant under the floor inside the rear of the car. They are rear wheel drive cars with a solid axle. Getting 33 mpg in the city and 41 on the highway with a 3 cylinder 70 horsepower engine is really amazing to me.
There are at least five groups that this car fits to a tee, and one is college kids. It is cheap to own, and cost effective to operate. Another group is active seniors in small towns with no high speed highways, although it is rated to go to a top speed of 90 mile per hour, with a zero to sixty time of 12.8 seconds! not too shabby and definitely enough to do the speed limit on any roadway in the United States! Campers and motor coach owners could use a little runabout that can be easily towed behind their home away from home!
Since these began selling in the United States the sales have outpaced production and there is constantly a waiting list to get one of your own Smart for Two cars. Daimler AG owns the Smart Cars and Mercedes Engineering worked on the design of these cars.
They are working on Hybrid and all Electric versions but nothing has been put to market yet. So I suggest you try a test drive and also keep an eye out for a used one.
Specs and prices came from the Smart for Two website and the Cleveland Auto Show.
