Ecovative Designs is a company that was established by two budding young entrepreneurs who had an idea to change Styrofoam packaging as we know it. By using mushroom roots and seed husks, they invented a process in which expanded polystyrene foam could be replicated naturally. The process uses a microbinding formula to grow fungus to the exact shape needed for the polystyrene replacement, creating a perfect packaging material that is 100% biodegradable and is green manufactured every step of the way.
By using seed husks as a catalyst to grow fungus, within a week a fungus can grow, be poured into a mold and take shape of any form or mold required. That could mean some serious competition in the near future for toxic and wasteful polystyrene foam companies.
Providing the same strength as Styrofoam, Ecocradle packaging is more efficiently made than conventional packaging materials. Less energy is needed to manufacture Ecocradle and no waste is accumulated during the process. In fact, agricultural waste cotton seed husks are used in the manufacturing process, further greening this product.
What makes the Ecocradle packaging so impressive is its ability to decompose. Unlike Styrofoam that pollutes our planet for eternity, Ecocradle packaging is biodegradable so you can simply chuck it in your compost pile. Don’t have a compost pile? Don’t worry! Ecocradle packaging is anaerobically compostable meaning that if it ends up in the garbage and gets thrown in the landfill; it will break down even without the presence of oxygen.
And in true entrepreneur fashion, the creators of Ecocradle used the technology from Ecocradle and turned it into rigid foam insulation for housing called Greensulate. This is the world’s first sustainable rigid foam insulation.
Unlike many other rigid foam products, it does not contain any glass fibers or other toxic petrochemicals and Greensulate is safe to touch without and special equipment or respirators. Since there are no spores or other fungus allergic reactions, it passes all ATSM tests for mold growth, water absorption and vapor transmission.
