If you live in Hampshire, England with a family, it can be difficult to find a good child-friendly restaurant. Especially if you don’t want to go to a gastro-pub, it can be difficult to find anything that isn’t too fancy, but isn’t McDonald’s or Pizza Hut. As a parent with small children in the Romsey area, here are the three best family friendly restaurants that we have found locally.
Prezzo in Romsey is located in a stunning historic building on Palmerston Street. Luckily they do have their own car park, which is especially convenient if you have small children with you. On first impression, this seems like more of a date restaurant. However, it is a popular destination with Romsey families. Once you’ve eaten there with a family, it becomes obvious why.
The Italian food served is perfect for the whole family, and their children’s menu is fantastic. The children’s dishes all come with a large garlic bread (even better with cheese), a drink, a main course, and ice cream for dessert. The portions are very generous, especially considering that the whole meal only costs £4.95. They also provide stickers and coloring pages for kids. If you want food that the whole family will really enjoy, Prezzo is a good option.
The White Horse Brasserie
The White Horse Hotel and Brasserie (part of the Silks chain) is very easy to find in central Romsey. The restaurant does not have its own parking; however it is easy to walk to from anywhere in central Romsey. The restaurant is in the ground level of the hotel, but is often visited by locals rather than just hotel guests.
At first glance, this does not look like a family restaurant. In fact, it looks quite high end. However, my family has always been impressed with the service. The staff made my children feel welcome, and made us feel comfortable there. For families, I particularly recommend going to The White Horse during nice weather and sitting in the lovely outside area. These outside tables are popular among families so that children can be a bit louder and wrigglier, and there’s enough space for strollers. Their children’s menu costs £5, although my children like ordering items from the brunch menu instead.
If you’re looking for something cheaper and less formal than Prezzo or The White Horse, then Cafe Fresh could be the perfect option for your family. This small cafe has a cute and welcoming atmosphere. You can either eat in or take away, and both are convenient as its centrally located at 9 Market Place.. They don’t have a huge menu (mostly sandwiches and drinks), but the food is good and affordable. This is the perfect spot for a quick family lunch while you’re out in Romsey. I particularly like the beautiful photographs of Romsey decorating the walls.
