Have you ever thought about learning yoga? Yoga is one types of exercise I always pushed aside because I didn’t think I would like it. It seemed slow and boring, how can anyone lose weight with that kind of workout, I thought to myself.
Well recently I have taken on a personal challenge for myself to learn how to do yoga. I have been doing basic yoga poses on the Wii Fit for a couple weeks now and I feel good. I never thought I would say it, but I love yoga!
The Wii Fit teaches you how to breathe correctly before you begin doing the poses, how you breathe is important in yoga. The first poses I learned in yoga are very basic poses. Like downward dog, Sun Salutation and the very popular Warrior pose. There were a few poses that were really hard to get used to because they required balancing on one leg.
In the short time I have been doing yoga I have learned a few things.
First, we have all heard that yoga reduces stress, right? Well I find this to be true. On the days when I don’t do the yoga I feel very lethargic and grumpy. Now that is just an observation, but seriously, I find that I feel better when I don’t miss the yoga workout.
Second, yoga improves your posture. I believe this to be true as well. I have found myself sitting up straighter and standing taller now that I have been doing yoga almost every day. Perhaps it’s because the Wii Fit guy is always telling me to concentrate on my spine!
Third, I love yoga. Yeah, I said it again. I love yoga, which is really weird because I can’t stand exercise. I do exercise, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. However, I find yoga to be very calming and empowering all at the same time. So… in a nutshell I have learned that yoga is not just about improving your body, but also about improving your mind and soul.
Hopefully as the poses get harder and I start doing actual yoga workouts intended to lose weight as well as stretch and tone, I will still love it as much as I do now.
If you are interested in yoga, I suggest that you find an instructor or some videos which will show you how to correctly do the poses. I am still learning and I am constantly worried about learning wrong. I’m sure a lot of information out there is not the right information, so be cautious when surfing the web looking for information on learning yoga.
But, do give yoga a try because you will probably like it.
