Anyone who knew me when I was younger, was aware that I played softball and that I was pretty good at it. I played for many teams in school, little league, and among traveling teams. I used to love pitching for my summer teams the best because we had weekend long tournaments in different places each week. There was always new competition and the amount of games meant that you had to really have good endurance. One of my favorite sports memories comes from my first year of playing traveling softball. I was playing for the Diamond Dolls 14-and under softball team at a tournament in Schenectady, NY.
On this day, I ended up pitching three games in a row to win the tournament. We played four or five games that day. It was a double elimination tournament and there were some really good teams there. I remember the game before the championship, we were playing the Dutchess Debs. They were an excellent team. It was so difficult to pitch in that heat, I remember sweat dripping down my forehead and stinging my eyes.
The team we ended up playing in the championship was a team that we had already played earlier in the day. They had orange and black uniforms. At this point, the Dutchess Debs had actually been tougher competition than this team. The reason for that is because this team only had one good pitcher and by this time in a tournament, her arm was done. We were able to beat that team and I won my first tournament trophy on a summer team.
This will always be one of my favorite memories because I really proved myself as a pitcher. I proved that I could not only throw hard and accurately, but that I also had the endurance to get the job done in a tournament. I will also always treasure these sports memories because I shared them with my father who loved the sport so much and loved watching me play.
